On a Video Call

On a Video Call

  • John Miller

Gatha

When the call begins, tabs open, notifications pull at me. Faces on the screen, but I’m not fully there. So I notice it, and reconnect with the people on the call.

Reflection

Video calls can make divided attention easy to hide. The camera is on. Faces are visible.

A nod or a small smile can make it look like you are present.

But another tab opens. A message arrives. A notification pulls at the edge of attention.

The conversation keeps moving, but part of you has already stepped away.

This moment is not about blaming yourself for drifting. It is about catching the drift while the conversation is still alive.

The return is small and immediate. Notice the pull, close or ignore the extra thing, and come back to the people on the call before the thread is gone.

Return to Choice

During the next call: notice the pull. Close the extra tab, silence the notification, and reconnect with the people on the screen.
