Difficult Conversation
- John Miller
Gatha
When I need to speak up, I feel the urge to soften it or say nothing at all.
If I avoid it, something stays unresolved. If I rush it, it comes out wrong.
So I pause, and say what needs to be said, as clearly as I can.
Reflection
The urge to soften a hard message can feel responsible. You want to protect the relationship. You want to keep the room calm.
You want the conversation to stay manageable.
But when the real issue stays hidden, the work has to carry it anyway. The tension does not disappear. It moves into side comments, delayed decisions, repeated confusion, or quiet resentment.
Rushing does not solve it either. When the pressure finally breaks through, the message can come out sharper than intended, and the conversation shifts from the issue to the impact of how it was said.
This moment is not about perfect wording. It is about pausing long enough to choose clarity before avoidance or urgency chooses for you.
The pause gives the truth a steadier shape. It lets you say the thing that needs to be said without making it larger, smaller, or harsher than it is.
Return to Choice
Before the conversation: pause. Name the one thing that needs to be said. Say it plainly, and leave room for the other person to respond.
